That I was also confusing authority and influence prevented me even more from fostering trust with my partners rather than enforcing again and again my bestowed authority. As a new director, I looked at my environment from an organizational chart point of view. I wasn't considering how I was stepping into an established culture with people I needed to show care for first and secure safety for before proposing something new. Everybody agreed on the problems at hand, but we didn't take the time to agree on the way to address them collaboratively and I missed the opportunity to lead that specific work.

This confusion between authority and influence is a common mistake that we can observe at the highest levels of power by both novices and pros. In fact, authority and power work together: the more you have of each, the more leverage you potentially have as well. As we know, leverage is always limited, but power is finite.
